Geography is a cross cutting discipline combining many aspects of science and arts. Thus, the

Department has a broad spectrum of students making it the largest department in Makerere University with more than 2,000 graduate and undergraduate students.

The Department boasts of four Undergraduate Degree Programmes: Bachelor of Tourism Management-BTM; Bachelor of Arts in Environment Management-BA ENV; Bachelor of Urban Planning-BURP and Bachelor of Arts in Arts-BAA with Geography as the major subject. The Department also services Bachelor of Arts with Education and Bachelor of Science with Education with Geography as the major teaching subject.

The Department also has five graduate programmes: two Post Graduate Diplomas (PGD in Integrated Rural Development Planning and PGD in Meteorology); two Masters Programmes (Master of Arts in Geography and Master of Arts in Land Use and Regional development) and conducts PhD programmes in Geography and related disciplines.

 

The Department is also active in research and has several research projects and linkages both within Uganda and with International organizations such as NORAD, START, DANIVA, ITC of Netherlands, EU and SIDA. The Department has established linkages with several departments of both national and international Universities, for instance the University of Bergen, Norway; University of Reading, UK; University of Nairobi, Kenya; Banue State University, Nigeria and University of Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania among others.

To service these programmes, currently the Department has 25 permanent staff and over 50 part time staff. The Departmental programmes offer academic and research opportunities to both nationals and international students. Currently, the Department is in the process of expansion into Makerere University Institute of Geographical Sciences (MIGS) to enhance its academic excellence as well as research capability.

The Department welcomes partners from Tertiary Institutions, Universities for academic excellence as well as research institutions from both government and non-government organizations locally and internationally for mutual advantage, development and capacity building of both Makerere University and beyond.
